Electricity Distribution

The distribution of electricity from the two power stations in Malta is achieved on four voltage levels which are:

 132kV
 33kV
 11kV
 400/230V

The frequency of the supply of electricity in Malta is 50Hz.

At present there are two distribution systems,  8km long 132kV circuits in service and these are installed between Delimara Power Station and the only 132kV Distribution Centre in operation in Malta which is located relatively close to Marsa Power Station at Marsa.

The 33kV system consists of overhead lines and underground cables, as shown in the following map. The map also shows the positions of the 18 strategically located Distribution Centres which step down the 33kV voltage to 11kV for more localized distribution to areas of demand.  There are no power stations in Gozo. Gozo is supplied with electricity from Malta via three submarine cable circuits which pass over the island of Comino where there is a 33/11kV distribution centre to supply electricity to Comino.

The length of the 33kV cable and overhead line circuits are 154 km and 60 km respectively.  In order to safeguard further the environment and to enhance system reliability, Enemalta’s policy is that future 33kV circuits shall be installed underground.  Moreover Enemalta is investing heavily in a system of tunnels for future 132kV circuits.  In fact Enemalta has two 132kV circuits between Marsa and Mosta which are partly installed in a 5.5km tunnel.  One of these two circuits is commissioned at 132kV and provides power to Phase I of the 132kV distribution centre. At present Enemalta is excavating another two tunnels that will link Delimara Power Station to the Marsa South distribution centre and Marsascala distribution centre. A third tunnel is being excavated between Sta Venera and Kappara.

The 11KV system which spreads throughout the Maltese Islands is also predominantly underground and future 11kV circuits will also be installed underground.  So far Enemalta has 1041km of 11kV underground cables and 159 km of 11kV overhead lines in service. The 11kV system also includes 1075 indoor type substations and 132 pole mounted transformers where the voltage level is stepped down from 11kV to 400/230V for final supply to Enemalta’s customers.  Some major industrial and commercial customers are supplied directly with electricity at 11kV.

The low voltage system in the Maltese Islands is a three phase, 4 wire, 400/230V system.  The acceptable tolerance on the voltage level for consumers is +10% to -6%. Except in Valletta and Floriana, where the system is mainly underground, the low voltage system consists mainly of overhead lines.

Major Development Projects

Enemalta is continually expanding its distribution network to enhance reliability and meet the increasing demand for electricity.

At present Enemalta is involved in the following major projects relating to the Distribution of electricity.

A 132/33/11kV Distribution Centre at Mosta to enhance supply in the North West and Gozo whilst enabling more power to be distributed from Delimara  Power Station.

A 33/11kV Distribution Centre at M’Scala equipped with 2 x 22.5 MVA transformers primarily intended to supply M’Scala and parts of Zejtun and Zabbar.

Enemalta also commissions about 40 new 11/0.4kV substations annually.
