The new 33kV Mrieħel Distribution Centre, within the Mrieħel Industrial Estate, aims to reinforce the redundancy levels of the electricity distribution network supplying the Company’s residential and commercial customers in these areas. It will also provide additional capacity to meet increased demand from several new major residential, industrial and commercial developments planned for this area in the next few years.

 

The Company is currently receiving offers for the turnkey construction of this new distribution centre. It will be equipped with transformers, 33kV and 11kV switchgear and other protection and control equipment. Construction works are expected to begin later this year. The new distribution centre was planned and designed by Enemalta’s in-house teams of project managers, engineers, architects and technicians. They will also be supervising all stages of its development to ensure that the contracted works meet the Company’s specifications and quality standards.

 

This development is the fifth new distribution centre the Company is adding to its network by the end of 2017. Another three distribution centres at Manoel Island, Marsa and Xewkija are in their final stages of development and will be energised later this year. The new St Andrew’s Distribution Centre at Pembroke has been energised and is currently undergoing final testing to be fully-commissioned shortly. With these developments, the number of distribution centres in the national electricity network managed and maintained by Enemalta plc will increase to 24.

 

The new installations are part of the Company’s Network Reinforcement Project, a three-year multi-million investment to improve network resilience, secure the necessary additional capacity to meet the country’s rising electricity demand and introduce new technologies to increase the efficiency of the national electricity distribution infrastructure. The project aims to improve quality of service to all customers in Malta and Gozo by reducing electricity supply disruptions and acquiring the necessary flexibility to provide a quicker response to natural faults, accidental or storm damages and other network disturbances.

 

The existing Santa Venera Distribution Centre, which currently distributes electricity to the Mrieħel, Santa Venera and Qormi areas, is also being upgraded with new equipment as part of the Network Reinforcement Project. Major upgrades to the Mellieha Distribution Centre are also underway. Several other works, including new high voltage network connections and the installation of new automation equipment, are in progress as well.
