An investment of €7 million in the Paceville Distribution Center to strengthen the electricity supply in St. Julian’s, Sliema and Gżira

During a visit by the Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development, Miriam Dalli, at the Paceville Distribution Centre, it was explained how the €7 million investment was made to address the expansion of the tourist and commercial area. “The number of residents and businesses in these areas has increased and we need to ensure that this growth is supported by the necessary infrastructure,” said Minister Dalli. She argued that the aim is to ensure that Enemalta is well equipped to meet the electricity demand. “We are investing in infrastructure to ensure energy efficiency.”  The Minister thanked Enemalta’s employees, who despite the complexity of the nature of this project, the latter was carried out without interruptions while the old switchgear was still operating from the same place.

This project began in 2017 where Enemalta’s engineers and architects started working on the technical aspect so that after a public call made in 2018, the contract for the works was awarded in 2019. This centre is now equipped with modern and more secure switchgear, where the device is controlled and protected by modern technology that offers more flexibility and resilience in the distribution of electricity. The system communicates directly with the Enemalta Control Center, which is situated in Marsa.

Enemalta’s Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Jason Vella, stated that with this project, Enemalta continued to strengthen its electricity supply by installing a third 30MVA transformer and reinforce the infrastructure that connects the same centre with those of Kappara and St. Andrews with the installation of cables which are approx. 8.3km long. “This is being done to be prepared for the needs of these areas in the best possible way,” explained Ing. Vella.
