From coal to cleaner energy

14.04.2022

In April of 27 years ago, Enemalta has stopped using coal to generate electricity.

This was possible through an engineering project which converted the coal-fired boilers to start operating on crude oil.

During the 1980s, in response to the increased energy demand and the constant rise in the international price of oil, Enemalta started using three coal-fired boilers.

April 1995 marked the end of coal usage which since then have resulted in a reduction in pollution and an improvement in air quality in Marsa and neighbouring localities.

In many European countries, the use of coal to generate electricity is, once more, on the rise in an attempt to reduce the dependency on Russian’s gas.

Notwithstanding, Enemalta has no intention of re introducing the use of coal.
